1922. Wunderjahr der Worte. What book would be more fitting to celebrate the 100th birthday of the Anhaltische Landesbücherei Dessau in literary form?

Across Europe, Norbert Hummelt accompanies authors through an exciting creative year, capturing the tense political atmosphere of the time. 1922 is a year of incredible creative energy: a miraculous year for modern literature, the dawn of modernity. A wealth of literary works appears that change the course of world literature. In Paris, James Joyce waits impatiently for the first copies of his "Ulysses". In London, Virginia Woolf is in the process of writing her own space. Rainer Maria Rilke is completing what he once began at Duino Castle. Katherine Mansfield is putting all her energy into her short stories. And in the English seaside resort of Margate, T.S. Eliot finds radical tones for the contradictory attitude to life of the still young 20th century.

And of course, the evening will also focus on the situation in Dessau at that time.

Norbert Hummelt was born in 1962 in Neuss and lives as a freelance writer in Berlin. He was awarded the Rainer Malkowski Prize in 2021 for his complete lyrical works. Previously, he had received the Hölty Prize for Poetry, the Rolf Dieter Brinkmann Prize, the Mondsee Poetry Prize and the Lower Rhine Literature Prize, among others. He translated T.S. Eliot's poetry cycles "The Desolate Land" and "Four Quartets" into German and is the editor of the poems of W.B. Yeats. Luchterhand recently published his poetry volumes "Fegefeuer" and "Sonnengesang".

Andreas Hillger was born in Dessau in 1967. After studying comparative religion, German and literature in Berlin and Halle, he worked as a journalist for the Mitteldeutsche Zeitung from 1991 to 2012. He lives as an author and dramaturge in Dessau. After his debut novel "Gläserne Zeit", "Ortolan" and most recently "Eiland" were published.
